BUOY AND BOATLIFT REGISTRATION LATE PENALTIES TO START

The deadline to register existing buoys and other moorings on Lake Tahoe passed on October 15, 2009. As directed in the TRPA Rules of Procedure, Article 9.21, owners of properties which are out of compliance with the requirement to apply for a mooring permit, to acquire a mooring permit, or to register and pay annual mooring fees may be subject to fines.

TRPA has held back on implementing late registration penalties. However, in the interest of fairness to approximately 1,000 mooring registrants that met the deadline, after April 19, 2010 the Agency will begin assessing penalties for late mooring applications and registrations. Pursuant to Article 9.21, applications received after April 19 will be subject to a $1,000 penalty or $100 per mooring, whichever is greater.

After April 19, applicants submitting buoy and boatlift/boathouse berth applications or registrations may be given a notice of violation with 30 days to respond. A streamlined process for paying the penalty immediately at the front counter will also be available.

Please be advised that mooring registrations received after June 15, 2010 will be assessed a penalty of $2,500 or $200 per buoy, whichever is greater.
